The Challenge

Your task is to visit any website of your choice and attempt to navigate it using only voice commands.

Steps to Complete:

Pick a website you use often, such as your own, a news site, or an online store.

Turn on voice control software:

  • Windows: Enable Voice Access in Accessibility settings or use Dragon NaturallySpeaking (if available).
  • Mac: Enable Voice Control in System Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
  • iPhone/iPad: Enable Voice Control in Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
  • Android: Enable Voice Access in Settings > Accessibility > Voice Access.

Use these voice commands to navigate. Note: Commands may vary depending on your voice control software.

Basic Navigation Commands (General)

  1. Move to the next item: "Next" or "Move forward"
  2. Move to the previous item: "Previous" or "Move backward"
  3. Click a link or button: "Click [link name]" or "Click button"
  4. Scroll the page: "Scroll down" or "Scroll up"
  5. Go back to the previous page: "Go back"

Voice Control Commands by System

Windows Voice Access (Windows 11)

  • Open a website: "Open [website name]"
  • Click a link: "Click [link name]"
  • Scroll down: "Scroll down"
  • Show numbers for clickable elements: "Show numbers"
  • Select text: "Select [text]"

Mac Voice Control

  • Click a button or link: "Click [button name]"
  • Scroll: "Scroll down" / "Scroll up"
  • Open a website: "Open Safari" / "Go to [website]"
  • Show numbers on screen: "Show numbers"
  • Move to the next heading: "Move to next heading"

iPhone/iPad Voice Control

  • Tap a button: "Tap [button name]"
  • Scroll: "Swipe up" / "Swipe down"
  • Open a website: "Open Safari" / "Go to [website]"
  • Show numbers on screen: "Show numbers"
  • Activate a link: "Tap [link name]"

Android Voice Access

  • Open a website: "Open Chrome" / "Go to [website]"
  • Click a button: "Tap [button name]"
  • Scroll: "Scroll down" / "Scroll up"
  • Show numbers on screen: "Show numbers"
  • Navigate to the next section: "Next" / "Previous"

Try Navigating a Website Using Only Your Voice

  • Attempt to open a website and interact with links and buttons.
  • Try filling out a form using voice commands.
  • Check if you can scroll smoothly and access all key features.

Reflection Questions

  • Could you complete tasks using only your voice?
  • Were all interactive elements accessible through voice commands?Did any buttons or links fail to respond?
  • Did you need to use a workaround to navigate?
  • Would a person relying on voice control be able to use this site independently?
